Speaking of Mad Men, people have talked endlessly about the amount of smoking on this show. In college, I remember discussing how difficult it is to show people smoking in films. As each take progresses, the cigarette burns further and further, and it becomes difficult to keep the continuity going. You start to see cigarettes jumping from barely smoked to almost done and back in the same scene.
So what do you do with a show like Mad Men where virtually every character smokes? You film them lighting up and putting cigarettes out. Knowing this, it makes me laugh because if you watch Mad Men, it’s almost as if these people hate smoking. Light it up, put it out, repeat.
You’ll never watch Mad Men the same way again.
